From October 25th to November 3rd, 2023, Tyrone Pretorius,Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, accompanied a delegation from the South African Department of Higher Education on a visit to Beijing, Wuhan, Shenzhen, and other universities in China. This trip was led by Buti Manamela, Deputy Minister of the South African Department of Higher Education and Science Innovation, and aimed to implement the consensus and achievements in the fields of education and high-level exchanges between China and the Republic of South Africa. The South African higher education delegation included officials from the South African Department of Higher Education and Science Innovation, as well as university presidents from Rhodes University, Durban University of Technology, the University of the Western Cape, Nelson Mandela University, Venda University, and officials from various education and training agencies.
During their visit in Beijing, the South African higher education delegation engaged in further discussions with Wang Jiayi, Deputy Minister of Education, on educational cooperation between the two countries. They also had a friendly meeting with Ma Jianfei, Director of the Language Cooperation and Exchange Center.
During their visit in Hubei, the South African higher education delegation had in-depth discussions at Central China Normal University on topics such as teacher training and educational informatization. During their visit in Shenzhen, the delegation mainly visited Shenzhen Polytechnic, where they gained insights into various fields, including telecommunications, automotive engineering, and mechatronics.
This visit marks a new milestone in the cooperation between South African and Chinese higher education, providing more opportunities for interaction and learning for students and scholars from both countries. The University of the Western Cape looks forward to deeper collaborations with more Chinese universities.
