Marching to Diversity: A Month of Learning and Cultural Exchange at the Institute

In March, the Institute engaged in various activities and events, providing students and staff with diverse learning and cultural experiences.

On March 5th, 2023, the Institute’s female teachers joined the Chinese Women's Association in Cape Town for a flower arrangement activity. This event allowed cultural exchange and bonding among women from different backgrounds. Additionally, to celebrate Women's Day, Dr Yang, a Chinese medicine doctor, volunteered to host a free clinic. This initiative offered our community valuable insights into the world of traditional Chinese medicine and demonstrated our commitment to promoting health and wellness.

On March 10th, we organised an outing for our Chinese school students to attend the South African premiere of the highly anticipated film, "The Wandering Earth 2." This event allowed our students to engage with contemporary Chinese cinema and foster a sense of community.

On March 18th, our teachers participated in the 2023 Cape Town Carnival by contributing to the photography and promotion efforts for the Chinese community float team. This involvement showcased the vibrancy of the Institute's culture and facilitated connections with the broader community.

From March 26th to 29th, the Institute participated in the coordination and organisation of the Precision Medicine Symposium. This event was a collaboration between the University of Western Cape in South Africa, the University of Missouri in the United States, and the University of Ghent in Belgium. Our involvement in this international symposium demonstrates our commitment to academic excellence and global collaboration.

From March 27th to 31st, we participated in the coordination and organisation of the 2023 South Africa-Sweden University Forum (SASUF 2023) and the South Africa-Sweden Research and Innovation Week. This event, held by the International Relations Office of the University of Western Cape, further highlights our dedication to fostering international partnerships in education and research.

We also participated in various embassy and consulate activities throughout March. On March 5th, Consul General You Wenze of the Chinese Consulate General in Cape Town and women staff of the Consulate visited the Institute to celebrate International Women's Day with our staff.

On March 9th, we took part in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa (1998-2023). During this event, we welcomed the arrival of Consul General You Wenze.

On March 31st, Sinovuyo Khanyisile Mkula, a student recommended by the Institute, had the honour of speaking at the BRICS People-to-People Exchange Forum. This achievement showcases our students' exceptional talent and dedication and reinforces the Institute’s reputation for academic excellence.
