CI Celebrates International Chinese Language Day, Showcasing Traditional Health-Preserving Tai Chi

On April 18, 2024, to celebrate International Chinese Language Day and promote Chinese culture, the Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa successfully held a demonstration of the "Eight Section Brocade" and Tai Chi fan, attracting a large number of students and staff members. This event not only showcased traditional Chinese fitness methods but also served as a bridge for cultural exchange.

The event took place in front of the teaching building of the Confucius Institute, where participants, under the guidance of Chinese medicine teacher Yang Hang, learned these two traditional Chinese fitness exercises together. The "Eight Section Brocade," as a simple and effective health-preserving exercise, was beloved by many participants for its gentle movements and respiratory adjustment function. The Tai Chi fan, with its graceful movements combining Tai Chi and dance elements, won rounds of applause from the audience.

Dr Iris Wu, the South African Co-Director of the Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the University of the Western Cape, stated, "We not only hope to promote the Chinese language and culture but also aim to enhance people's physical health through traditional Chinese fitness exercises such as the 'Eight Section Brocade' and Tai Chi fan. These traditional skills are an important part of Chinese culture, and their popularization contributes to deepening understanding and friendship between China and South Africa."

At the end of the event, many participants expressed that they not only gained a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese fitness exercises, but also felt the unique charm of Chinese culture. The institute also provided relevant materials and learning opportunities, encouraging participants to continue exploring and learning more about Chinese culture and health practices.
